Ingredients

Toor dal (split pigeon peas)¾ cup
Tamarinda lemon sized ball
Tomato1 medium
Green chilli2
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)1 tsp
Water3 cups
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1 tbsp
Garlic6 cloves
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Dried red chilli2
Curry leaves2 sprigs
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a handful

Method

3 steps
  1. 1Pressure cook dal with turmeric, tomato and green chillies for 4 whistles. Whisk smooth.
  2. 2Add tamarind extract, chilli powder, salt and water; simmer 10 minutes.
  3. 3Baghaar: fry garlic, cumin, red chillies and curry leaves in oil and pour over. Add coriander.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
