Ingredients

Pineapple2 cups, cubed
Tamarinda small piece
Jaggery3 tbsp
Water¾ cup
Turmeric (ground turmeric)a pinch
Urad dal (split black gram)1 tsp
Chana dal (split chickpeas)1 tsp
Coriander seeds2 tsp
Dried red chilli5
Sesame seeds1 tsp
Fresh grated coconut¼ cup
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1 tbsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Curry leaves2 sprigs
Asafoetidaa pinch
Saltto taste

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Cook pineapple in tamarind water with turmeric and salt until soft.
  2. 2Roast urad dal, chana dal, coriander seeds, red chillies and sesame, then coconut. Grind to a paste.
  3. 3Add paste and jaggery to the pineapple and simmer until thick.
  4. 4Temper mustard, curry leaves and asafoetida in oil and pour over.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
