Ingredients

4 servings
Moong dal (split yellow mung beans)1 cup, soaked 1 hour
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1½ tbsp
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Asafoetidaa pinch
Ginger1.5 cm, grated
Green chilli1, chopped
Turmeric (ground turmeric)½ tsp
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)¾ tsp
Coriander powder (ground coriander)1 tsp
Sugar1 tsp
Lemon juice1 tbsp
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a handful
Saltto taste
Water1¼ cups

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Drain the soaked dal.
  2. 2Heat oil, add cumin, asafoetida, ginger and chilli, then the dal, turmeric and salt. Stir 1 minute.
  3. 3Add hot water, cover and cook on low without stirring until the water is absorbed.
  4. 4Sprinkle chilli, coriander powder and sugar, fluff with a fork, finish with lemon and coriander.
Serve it like this

Serve hot on a plate, with a few fresh coriander leaves on top.
