Classic gateau piment.

Ingredients

6 servings
Chana dal (split chickpeas)1½ cups yellow split peas, soaked overnight
Green chilli3 to 4, chopped
Spring onion (green onion, scallion)3, chopped
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a handful
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Baking soda (bicarb soda, bicarbonate of soda)a pinch
Saltto taste
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)for frying (about 80 ml absorbed)

Method

3 steps
  1. 1Drain the peas and grind coarsely without water.
  2. 2Mix in chilli, spring onion, coriander, cumin, salt and soda.
  3. 3Shape small balls, press a dent in the centre and fry at 170 C until deep golden.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a paper bag or bowl with tomato chutney, or stuffed into buttered bread.
