Toor dal (split pigeon peas)½ cup
Chana dal (split chickpeas)¼ cup
Dried red chilli3
Asafoetidaa pinch

Green beans3 cups, chopped fine
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)2 tbsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Urad dal (split black gram)1 tsp
Curry leaves1 sprig
Fresh grated coconut2 tbsp, optionalMethod
- 1Drain the soaked dals and grind coarsely with red chillies, asafoetida and salt, without water.
- 2Steam the dal paste in an idli plate or covered steamer until firm.
- 3Cool and crumble the steamed dal with your fingers.
- 4Cook the beans with turmeric, salt and a splash of water until just tender.
- 5Heat oil, splutter mustard and urad dal, add curry leaves, then the crumbled dal. Fry until golden.
- 6Toss in the beans and coconut and stir for a minute.
Serve it like thisServe hot on a plate, with a few fresh coriander leaves on top.
