Ingredients

Poha (flattened rice)2½ cups thick avalakki
Onion1 medium, chopped
Green chilli2, chopped
Peanuts2 tbsp
Chana dal (split chickpeas)2 tsp
Urad dal (split black gram)1 tsp
Mustard seeds1 tsp
Curry leaves1 sprig
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Asafoetidaa pinch
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)2 tbsp
Lemon juicejuice of 1/2 lemon
Sugar1 tsp
Fresh grated coconut¼ cup
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a small handful
Saltto taste

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Rinse the poha in a colander under running water 2 or 3 times and drain. Sprinkle with salt and sugar and leave for 5 minutes.
  2. 2Heat oil and fry the peanuts until crisp. Add mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, curry leaves, chillies and asafoetida.
  3. 3Add the onion and cook until soft.
  4. 4Add turmeric, then the poha. Toss gently, cover and steam on low.
  5. 5Switch off. Add lemon juice, coconut and coriander and toss lightly.
Serve it like this

Serve hot on a plate, with a few fresh coriander leaves on top.
