Ingredients

4 servings
Fish6 rohu steaks
Turmeric (ground turmeric)1 tsp
Saltto taste
Mustard oil3½ tbsp
Panch phoron½ tsp pancha phutana
Dried red chilli2
Garlic6 cloves, ground with the mustard
Mustard paste2 tbsp
Green chilli3, slit
Tomato1 large, chopped
Water1 cup

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Rub the fish with turmeric and salt and fry in smoking mustard oil until golden. Lift out.
  2. 2In the same oil, temper pancha phutana and dried chillies. Add the tomato and cook until soft.
  3. 3Mix the mustard paste and ground garlic with water and add. Season and bring to a simmer.
  4. 4Add the fish and green chillies, simmer covered until the gravy coats the fish.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
