Ingredients

4 servings
Fish500 g kingfish or pomfret, in steaks
Fresh grated coconut1½ cups
Dried red chilli6 byadgi chillies
Coriander seeds2 tsp
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Black pepper½ tsp
Fenugreek seedsa pinch
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Tamarinda small lemon sized ball
Onion1 medium, sliced
Garlic4 cloves
Coconut oil2 tbsp
Curry leavesa sprig
Water1¼ cups
Saltto taste

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Rub fish with turmeric and salt.
  2. 2Lightly roast chillies, coriander, cumin, pepper and fenugreek; grind with coconut, tamarind, garlic and a little onion to a smooth paste.
  3. 3Heat coconut oil, fry the rest of the onion and curry leaves, add the paste and water and simmer 8 minutes.
  4. 4Slide in the fish and simmer gently until opaque, shaking the pan instead of stirring.
Serve it like this

Serve in a clay pot with boiled red rice, a fried fish piece and sol kadhi.
