Ingredients

4 servings
Fish4 medium mackerel, cleaned and cut in thick pieces
Fresh grated coconut1 cup
Dried red chilli5 to 6 dried red chillies
Coriander seeds2 tsp
Malvani masala2 tsp
Turmeric (ground turmeric)½ tsp
Onion1 small, sliced
Garlic4 cloves
Kokum4 petals
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1½ tbsp
Saltto taste
Water1⅔ cups

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Rub the fish with salt and turmeric and set aside.
  2. 2Grind coconut, dried chillies, coriander seeds, garlic and a little onion with water to a smooth red paste.
  3. 3Heat oil, fry the rest of the onion until soft, add the paste, malvani masala and water, and bring to a boil.
  4. 4Add kokum and the fish. Simmer gently 6 to 8 minutes without stirring, just swirling the pan.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
